Plumbing design: Lance’s magnificent seven
After many years in the wild world of plumbing design, I’ve managed to come up with a few rules. Seven, to be exact:
- Before commencing work on your plumbing design, find all the sewers outfalls and manholes.
- Plumbing design should be based around central mechanical cores.
- In the space above the ceiling, gravity-fed piping is numero uno in plumbing design.
- In plumbing design, your first responsibility is public safely. But money matters too.
- Save your clients money with design/build plumbing design.
- In plumbing design, drain, waste and vent (DWV) piping should never be less than 2” and water supply piping should never be less than ½ inch.
- Wool suits are not practical attire for the plumbing designer, but you needn’t settle for dirty overalls either. It’s important to look good in plumbing design. I usually suggest some khakis with a polo shirt. But if you really want to make a splash in plumbing design, try jodhpurs with a billowing white shirt and silk scarf. You’ll be the best dressed plumbing designer in town!
